Group Sailing Trips: The Boat Is the Party

Group sailing trips put your whole crowd on one deck: swims off the stern before breakfast, lunch at anchor in a cove, a new harbor for dinner. With a group of friends, a family or a club, a sailing vessel becomes a floating house that moves every day.

Group Sailings is a guide to doing that well. Most group cruise sites are about big ships, where your group is a few dozen cabins among thousands of other guests. This site is about the smaller end of the water: chartering a crewed yacht or catamaran for your group, a wooden gulet on the Turkish coast, island-hopping in the Caribbean or Greece, and filling (or chartering) a tall ship. We explain how each works, who it suits, and what to ask before anyone pays a deposit. You will not find prices here; they depend on boat, season and group size, and a good quote beats any number on a web page.

Four Ways to Sail as a Group

Group of people on the deck of a white sailing yacht near a green coastline

Charter a crewed yacht

A sailing yacht or catamaran with a skipper (and often a cook) for your group alone.

Caribbean island-hopping

Short hops between sheltered anchorages in the trade winds.

The Greek islands

Ionian calm, Saronic day sails or the windier Cyclades.

And if your group is bigger than any single yacht, look at tall ships and small sailing cruise ships, which take a group block or a whole-ship charter.

Who Group Sailing Suits

Friends who want the same week

One boat, one schedule, no one stuck at a different hotel. Shared meals on deck become the trip.

Families and multi-generations

Grandparents read in the shade while the kids jump off the swim platform; everyone is in sight.

Clubs and alumni groups

Two or three boats sailing in company make a flotilla, with dinners together ashore.

Milestone trips

Birthdays, anniversaries and reunions feel bigger in a private cove. See Cruising Reunions for big-ship reunion planning.

Group sailing suits people who enjoy close quarters. Cabins on yachts and gulets are compact and you share the boat all day, so choose your shipmates carefully. Seasickness is less of an issue in sheltered waters than many expect, but anyone who is unsure should pick a calm cruising ground for a first trip.

Before Anyone Pays a Deposit

  • Agree the budget range and how it is split — per cabin, per person, or by family.
  • Count cabins and bathrooms, not just berths; a saloon berth is not a bedroom.
  • Pick the season for the sailing ground (hurricane season, summer winds).
  • Ask what the charter fee covers and what is extra: fuel, food, drink, berthing fees, crew tip.
  • Check the cancellation terms and consider travel insurance for the whole group.
  • Decide who signs the contract and collects money; one organizer, clear records.

For the organizer’s side of any group trip — collecting deposits, room lists, keeping everyone informed — Group Cruise Planner has a step-by-step that applies just as well to a group of boats as to a big ship.

Big Ship, Small Boat, or Both?

Some groups mix the two: a week on a crewed catamaran in the Virgin Islands before or after a big-ship Caribbean cruise, or a Greek island sail added to a Mediterranean voyage. Others start on a big ship and graduate to sailing. If a big-ship group is closer to what you need, CruiseGroups.us explains group packages and Cruising Groups covers the full-ship theme charters you can join. For small expedition ships rather than sailboats, see Explorer Cruising. Sailing on your own and want to join a group? Sailing Single covers solo travel at sea.

Group Sailing Trips: Quick Answers

What is a group sailing trip?

Any trip where your group sails together on a sailing vessel: a crewed yacht or catamaran you charter for yourselves, a Turkish gulet, a historic schooner, or a block of cabins on a small sailing cruise ship. The common thread is that the boat, not a resort, is home for the week.

How many people fit on a group yacht charter?

It depends on the boat. A typical crewed catamaran or monohull sleeps a family or two couples to a few couples, larger gulets sleep more, and bigger groups usually book two or more boats sailing together, or move up to a small sailing ship.

Do we need to know how to sail?

No. On a crewed charter, a gulet or a sailing cruise ship, the crew does the sailing. Only a bareboat charter, where your group skippers the boat itself, needs someone with the right sailing qualifications.
